OVERVIEW
The Vancouver Island Spine Relay will be held in June 2010, involving groups of individuals running, hiking, cycling, mountain biking and horseback riding along parts of the Vancouver Island Spine Trail from Cape Scott to Victoria. The purpose of the Relay is to increase community support for the development of the Trail.
REGISTRATION
Click here to sign up. Individual entrants can sign up for one or more Sections of the Relay. Team entries are also welcome - for the same Section, or more than one Section.
PARTICIPATION
People with good physical fitness are invited to participate in one or more sections the Relay (Some sections require a high level of physical fitness, indicated in the schedule below). In addition to the core participants, we will be inviting school groups, community leaders, the general public, businesses, the media and politicians to hike for short sections (e.g., half day) during six Community Days.
SCHEDULE
The schedule for the relay is as follows. For multi-day Sections, you can sign up for part of the Section, provided that logistics can be worked out. (*** indicates a section where a high level of physical fitness is required).

Saturday, June 5, 2010, Section 1, hike from Cape Scott Provincial Park parking lot to Nissen Bight. 15 km one way (return trip option).

*** Sunday, June 6, Section 2, run the North Coast Trail to Shushartie Bay, travel to Port Hardy by boat. 43 km.

Section 3, mountain bike from Shushartie River to Port Hardy along river and logging road. 30+ km (Cancelled due to lack of registration).

Tuesday, June 8, Community Day at Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre in Port Hardy, short hike with participation of local schools, businesses, service clubs, First Nations, local governments, community members.

Wednesday, June 9-10, Section 4, road cycle to Campbell River, overnight in Woss on June 9. 245 km.

Friday, June 11 morning, Community Day at BeaverLodge Lands in Campbell River, short hike (with schools, etc).

Section 5, road cycle to Mount Washington. 60 km one-way (Cancelled due to lack of registration).

Saturday, June 12-13, Section 6 hike or snowshoe from Mount Washington to Forbidden Plateau ski area near Cumberland in Strathcona Provincial Park. 23 km.

Tuesday, June 15, Community Day in Cumberland, short "historical hike" starting at Community Centre (with schools, etc).

Section 7, mountain bike in Cumberland area on the community trails. ~20 km (Cancelled due to lack of registration).

Section 8, hike or snowshoe from Mount Clifton to Port Alberni along Beaufort range and down from Mount Hal to Log Train Trail. 44 km. (Deferred to later in summer due to snow pack).

Sunday, June 20, Community Day at McLean Sawmill in Port Alberni, short hike along Log Train Trail (with schools, etc).

Monday, June 21-23, Section 9, mountain bike from Port Alberni to Lake Cowichan via logging roads and (maybe) Runner’s Trail between Headquarters Bay and Francis Lake. 110 km.

Thursday, June 24, Community Day at Saywell Park in Lake Cowichan, short hike on Trans Canada Trail on the Cowichan River (with schools, etc).

*** Friday, June 25-26, Section 10, run from Lake Cowichan to Langford along Trans-Canada trail (including horseback riders to Shawnigan Lake on June 25). 72 km (42k day 1, 30k day 2). Shorter, 13 km option for Saturday, June 26.

Sunday, June 27, Section 11, cycle from Colwood to Victoria on the Galloping Goose Trail, ~ 15km, (meet at CRD Parking Lot at Royal Roads University turn-off on Sooke Road at 8:30am)
Followed by Community Day at Clover Point in Victoria, hike to Mile 0 and Beacon Hill Park (with schools, etc).
Technical T-SHIRTS
The first 35 women and 35 men registrants will be provided a technical shirt with a Relay logo, sponsored by Mountain Equipment Coop. Click on the following links for men's and women's shirts.
LOGISTICS
Participants must arrange transportation to, and accommodations before the start of each Relay Section. Directions and suggested accommodations will be sent to participants in advance. VISTA will offer volunteers to transport your vehicle to the end of each Section or suggest public transportation options (bus). Food and gear must be provided by each participant, but VISTA will provide a gear and provisions list in advance.
